How Gender Equality Helps Empower Women in Africa

When it comes to gender inequality, Africa isn’t any different. The patriarchal culture in the continent makes the repercussions of these challenging imbalances worse. Women’s empowerment programs is a step to help reduce the disparities between genders. Here are a few reasons why:

Gender Equality in Education
Currently, girls in the country face many barriers to education. These include societal expectations, which mean girls should look after the home, so they don’t require an education. This may also lead to cyclical poverty, early pregnancy, and gender-based violence. Breaking down these barriers and making sure girls can access quality education is fundamental to reaching gender equality and empowering women. And when women are educated, they have the chance to attain higher wages and contribute to economic growth.

Gender-based violence
Gender inequality is the root of gender-based violence. According to the statistics that reflect on the current scenario of crime against women in South Africa for example, 6.8% of women think it’s acceptable for her husband to hit her if she argues with him, close to the 7.7% of men who think it is acceptable to do so. Gender-based violence also has a crucial impact on girls’ education. As sexual violence and harassment of girls are common in schools across the continent, it makes it difficult for girls to succeed in school and can result in dropping out.

Women’s economic empowerment
According to the Global Wage Report, South Africa has some of the highest levels of wage inequality in the world. The average gender pay gap in monthly earnings is 28.6%. However, practical-skills training in local communities is necessary to help women pursue better employment and gain a higher income. Some organizations also offer support with skills workshops, helping women to up skill so women are capable of accessing more job opportunities.
Bonazah Community Development of Africa is one organization that offers women’s empowerment programs in Africa.
